What is FibroScan?

The Non-Invasive Standard for Checking Your Liver

FibroScan® is a specialised ultrasound-based machine made by Echosens (France). A small probe placed on the skin over the liver sends a gentle vibration through it and measures how fast it travels. A stiffer liver means more scarring (fibrosis).

At the same time it measures how much fat is in the liver. Together, these two numbers help our hepatologists diagnose liver disease early, decide on treatment and track your progress over time — often without the need for a liver biopsy.

What Does FibroScan Measure?

Your report shows two scores that your doctor will explain to you.

Liver Stiffness (LSM)

Measured in kPa

Liver Stiffness Measurement by VCTE™ shows how much scarring (fibrosis) is in the liver — from a healthy liver, through mild and moderate fibrosis, up to cirrhosis. It is the most widely validated non-invasive test for liver fibrosis.

Liver Fat (CAP™)

Measured in dB/m

The Controlled Attenuation Parameter measures how much fat has built up in the liver (steatosis). It helps detect and grade fatty liver disease early, before it causes lasting damage.

Who Is It For?

Who Should Get a FibroScan?

Your doctor may advise a FibroScan if you have, or are at risk of, any of the following.

Hepatitis B or C

To check for liver damage before and after treatment.

Fatty Liver (NAFLD / NASH)

To measure the fat level and look for scarring.

Diabetes or Overweight

People at higher risk of silent fatty liver disease.

Abnormal Liver Tests

Raised ALT / AST or other liver blood tests.

Alcohol-Related Liver Disease

To assess the extent of liver injury.

Cirrhosis Follow-Up

To monitor known liver disease over time.

Your Visit

How Is the FibroScan Test Done?

Simple, quick and comfortable — very similar to a normal ultrasound.

Patient lying comfortably while a FibroScan probe is placed over the liver
  1. Lie down comfortably

You lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head.

  2. Probe placed over the liver

A little gel is applied and the probe is placed between the ribs on your right side. You will only feel a light tapping.

  3. Readings are taken

Around 10 quick measurements are recorded. The whole exam takes less than 10 minutes.

  4. Results the same visit

Your stiffness (kPa) and fat (CAP) scores are ready immediately for your doctor to review.

Preparation: Please do not eat for about 3 hours before the test (small sips of water are fine). Wear comfortable clothing and bring your previous reports.

FAQs

Common Questions About FibroScan

Is FibroScan painful?

No. There are no needles and no injections. You only feel a light tapping on the skin over the liver.

How long does the test take?

The scan itself takes less than 10 minutes, and your results are available straight away.

Do I need to fast before the test?

Yes. Please avoid eating for about 3 hours before your scan, as a recent meal can affect the reading. Small sips of water are fine.

Can FibroScan replace a liver biopsy?

In many patients FibroScan gives enough information to avoid a biopsy. Your doctor will decide if any further tests are needed based on your results.

Is there anyone who should not have a FibroScan?

Please tell our team before the test if you are pregnant or have a pacemaker or defibrillator, so the doctor can advise you.
